EigenLayer lets already-staked ETH be committed as security for additional services, called AVSs, that would otherwise need to bootstrap their own validator set and token. Operators accept extra slashing conditions in exchange for extra reward. It is an influential and consequential design: it reuses the same collateral across multiple obligations, which concentrates risk as well as capital.
